BrotherThe goal of two 20-year-old midfielders helped Arsenal to defeat the bottom of the table Newcastle 2-0, in the early match of the 13th round of the Premier League on the evening of November 27.
Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli both scored from a beautiful combination to help Arsenal bounce back from defeat at Anfield. Mikel Arteta’s teachers and students are only behind West Ham’s fourth place by goal difference, while the visitors Newcastle continue to be the only club in the four professional divisions of England who have not won a single match this season.
A week after the 0-4 loss to Liverpool, Arsenal returned to the Emirates to receive the team with the richest owner in the football world. The host dominates almost all the parameters. They shot almost three times more, controlled the ball twice as long and created far more dangerous chances.
Arsenal are fifth but their goal difference is only -2. If they made good use of the opportunities, they could have turned this difference into a positive number. In which the host has a tenth chance in the first half. Saka passed Lascelles on the left, then crossed as if to order Emile Smith-Rowe to finish close to the wall. Goalkeeper Martin Dubravka tries to push out Aubameyang’s position in front of the empty goal. But, the Arsenal captain cushioned the ball and hit the post in a confusing way.
Before that, Newcastle also once hit the Arsenal goal, with a long shot from Jonjo Shelvey. But goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale proved once again that he is the best rookie in the Premier League this season with a flying save with his finger. The ball then grazed the crossbar and flew out.
Newcastle played quite well in the first half, but suffered in the second half. Arsenal continued to bombard the goal from the beginning of the second half, and finally opened the scoring after 56 minutes. After a series of bounces on the left, defender Nuno Tavares poked a gap for Saka to face the keeper in the narrow left corner. Captain Lascelles was busy raising his hand for offside, giving Saka more time and space to help sink Dubravka down the corner.
Arsenal’s second goal came from a situation on the right. Japan defender Takehiro Tomiyasu hung the ball into the penalty area for Martinelli to quickly drop down. The Brazilian midfielder touched the ball first and finished it right away, when the goalkeeper did not have time to rush. This is Martinelli’s first goal this season, after a long time of convalescence.
In the remaining minutes, Arsenal created more chances from the counter-attack like Martinelli or Alexandre Lacazette both missed. Arteta’s teachers and students nonetheless secured fifth place until at least the next round, when they had to march to Old Trafford to meet Man Utd on Thursday night, December 2.
