More than 200 euros difference in the insurance premium! With the Audi A3 2.0 TFSI, this large price difference results solely from the insured person’s place of residence. Those who live in Münster pay significantly less than the Audi driver in the German capital.
The reason for this are the so-called regional classes. And that’s not all: the accident behavior of a car model can also change the insurance classification. If there is a frequent crash on the A3, the contribution increases.
The Association of the German Insurance Industry (GDV) determines how the premiums develop once a year. It updates the classifications of all registration districts and all vehicle types registered in Germany.
Now it’s that time again: The new regional and type classes for 2022 have been determined. The good news about it: It doesn’t have to get more expensive automatically. In addition to upgrades, there are also downgrades that make car insurance cheaper.
In principle, the following applies: the higher the regional or type class, the more expensive the fee.
Expensive city vs. cheap city
In the metropolis of Berlin, car insurance is particularly expensive, but cheap in Münster. The Audi A3 has a price difference of up to 216 euros
|city||Liability||Liability + partial coverage||Liability + fully comprehensive|
|Berlin||€ 256.76||€ 358.18||€ 600.75|
|Muenster||€ 175.99||€ 221.80||€ 384.54|

Because the classes stand to a certain extent for the risk of damage in the various registration areas and vehicle types. If there is a lot of expensive damage in a registration area, such as in Berlin, this district receives a high regional class.
The same applies to vehicle types that are frequently involved in accidents or for which a large number of comprehensive damage claims are reported. If a certain car appears in the statistics with only a few damage, the type class is correspondingly low. The GDV uses the damage balance of the past three years as a basis.
In addition to the number of damages, the total cost of the compensations paid also matters. The regional classes range from 1 to 12 in liability, from 1 to 16 in partial coverage and from 1 to 9 in fully comprehensive. They are usually particularly high in large cities.
This is where the volume of traffic is greatest, so there are more accidents than in less densely populated areas. Comprehensive damage caused by theft, vandalism or dents from parking are also more common in cities than in rural areas.
In the current regional statistics, Berlin has the worst damage record nationwide. In the capital, the damage is more than a third higher than the national average.
The insurance is correspondingly expensive: The comparison portal Verivox has calculated in a case study that liability insurance in Berlin is 46 percent more expensive than in Münster. For a fully comprehensive insurance, the costs were 56 percent higher, for a partially comprehensive insurance they were as much as 61 percent.
Where is insurance expensive, where is it cheap?
|Regional class||Liability||Partial coverage||Fully comprehensive|
|Frankfurt a. M.||12 (+1)||3||5 (-1)|
|Dusseldorf||12 (+1)||5||5 (-1)|
|Dresden||10||6 (-1)||4 (-1)|
|Dortmund||10||4 (-1)||4 (-1)|

The type classes distinguish between 16 levels of liability (from 10 to 25), 24 in partially comprehensive (from 10 to 33) and 25 in fully comprehensive (from 10 to 34). While the insurance benefits for injured parties involved in an accident are decisive in liability, the value of the insured car also plays a role in comprehensive insurance.
Therefore, many have highly motorized luxury class models and SUV high type classes, older models and small cars rather low classes. The GDV announced the new classifications for 2022 at the end of August (regional classes) and beginning of September (type classes).
They are already being used for new contracts, and for current contracts only from January next year.
Specifically, this means that more than seven million drivers will have higher classifications in the future. In the regional classes there are higher classifications for around five million drivers.
At the same time, other drivers will benefit from more favorable ratings in the future. How this will change the insurance premium for the individual insured cannot be predicted across the board.
Wolfgang Schütz, tariff expert and managing director at Verivox, says: “Reclassifications from one year to the next are in most cases just one class up or down. The additional contributions or savings for individual drivers are usually less than ten percent. “
There are exceptions, however: “With new cars, the risk of damage can only be estimated,” says Schütz. “That is why, in the first few years after the market launch, there are more often large jumps in the type class classification than in older vehicle models. “

In such cases, the insurance can be up to 30 percent more expensive or cheaper, as the sample calculation from Verivox shows. How much motorists will actually have to pay for their insurance in the coming year, however, depends on other factors. For one thing, the price increase after an upgrade is not the same for all insurers.
On the other hand, in addition to reclassifications in the type or regional class, other changes can have an impact on costs – such as a more favorable no-claims class. “General price adjustments by the insurer can also increase or decrease costs,” says Wolfgang Schütz.
In any case, an insurance comparison is worthwhile. “Cheap tariffs with good services are on average around 25 percent cheaper than tariffs in the middle price segment,” says the insurance expert.
Special right of termination in the event of a price increase
The old contract must generally be terminated four weeks before the next due date; since most contracts are dated January 1st, you must cancel by November 30th; A different key date applies to contracts with a main maturity within the year.
But: If the premium increases – be it through a reclassification of the regional or type class or through a general price adjustment of the insurance – there is anyway a special right of termination. The contract can then often be terminated after the regular termination date.
The decisive factor is when the insured person receives the information about the increase. The four-week notice period begins upon receipt of the notification. If you want to find out how your car and its registration district are classified, you can check this on the GDV consumer portal ( www.dieversicherer.de).
An annual insurance check with a comparison calculator is actually always recommended – but especially if the premium increases due to a change in the regional or type class. In most cases there is a cheaper provider with comparable services.
