After a long struggle, the fine bankruptcy is over – and the violation of many traffic rules will soon be significantly more expensive! The Federal Council today approved the changes to the catalog of fines, which regulate the amount of fines in road traffic.

The changes were originally decided in April 2020. Because of massive criticism of some drastic penalties, subsequent changes and legal formal errors, the new fines will be launched with considerable delay.

What is fundamentally new?

Higher penalties for many rule violations, cyclists and pedestrians should be better protected, parking offenders in particular are an issue.

According to the rationale of the regulation, the higher penalties are intended to “contribute to changing the awareness of road users”.

The chairman of the Transport Ministers’ Conference (VMK), Bremen’s Senator Maike Schaefer (Greens): “The new regulations and the painful fines are a clear signal to drivers to adhere to speed limits. We know that excessive speed is the number one cause of accidents. The catalog of fines and road traffic regulations are ultimately traffic-educational measures for mutual consideration. “

When does the new catalog of fines apply?

The Bundestag approved it today. Now Federal Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer still has to sign the ordinance, the changes to the catalog of fines will come into force three weeks after the announcement in the Federal Law Gazette – for “sufficient preparation of the practical implementation” by the authorities. The higher penalties are therefore expected to apply from the beginning of November.
