The production lines in the new Tesla Gigafactory near Berlin are not even running, but there is already a lot of German technology in every Tesla Model 3!

This is not communicated publicly. Everything is top secret, like so much at Tesla. Now a study by the Dortmund University of Applied Sciences on behalf of the Handelsblatt reveals how much Germany is already in the Ami-Stromer.

It’s about the suppliers, the secret heroes of the auto industry and also important employers. Everyone knows the big manufacturers like VW, BMW and Mercedes. But only dozens of suppliers, mostly so-called “hidden champions” (German: “secret winners”), ensure smooth car production with their parts and components.

Tesla’s first Gigafactory is located in Fremont (USA), where the Model 3 is built, among other things

These “hidden champions” are medium-sized companies with headquarters in Germany and at the same time world market leaders. Often they specialize in small niches in car manufacturing, where they shine with innovation and quality.

38 of these companies were identified in the study, most of them are located in North Rhine-Westphalia and Baden-Württemberg, over half are family businesses – and without them, no Model 3 would hit the streets!

The oldest Tesla supplier, the Möllergroup based in Bielefeld, was founded back in 1730. The family company employs around 2,300 people, half of them in Germany.

For this purpose, the electrical pioneer Tesla is supplied with parts by nine large calibers from the German supplier industry. All of them are also leaders in the world market and have an annual turnover of over five billion euros: Bosch, Continental, Hella and ZF are among them. Companies that are not only known as industry experts and that have their fingers in the game everywhere in the vehicle market.

Attention: This is about the Tesla Model 3! This has been built in Fremont (USA) since 2017, and production also started in the Gigafactory Shanghai in 2019. Even in this model, 35 percent of the parts come from German suppliers. It is quite possible that this proportion will increase with the start of production of the Model Y in the Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg.
